Tallulah Gorge State Park
About six years ago, our niece was getting married. We needed a place to stay in Northeast Georgia just for a few nights. It seemed silly to tow our (then) Passport all the way to NE Georgia for four nights.
We asked Mark's dad about staying with him, but Mark's brother had already claimed it.
We asked Mark's sister about staying with her, but his other sister already claimed it.
We looked into hotels but couldn't stomach the cost with food and dogs.
We ended up taking the Passport after all and staying at Tallulah Gorge State Park. We loved it and have made it an almost yearly event since that trip in October 2011.
For a few years, we hit the gorge in October. Then the kids became involved in our homeschool group's cross country team and races are every week in October. Two years ago, we started going in November for Thanksgiving. In November 2015, we took our Passport. That would be our last Georgia trip in our beloved Passport.
November 2016 - we spent 6 nights at Tallulah Gorge and as always loved it! This trip was a little different. For starters, we had to leave a day later because our oldest daughter had a commitment for her Youth In Government club. So we headed up on Saturday evening after picking our oldest up at the YMCA parking lot with Open Range in tow. We traveled to our favorite Wal Mart in Valdosta, GA for the night. Second, there were forest fires all around and some days we had to deal with smoke. Finally, this was our first trip back to Georgia after Mark's dad passed away (we did stay at his house then because the Open Range was at Lazydays for service). So we had to spend time working on his dad's house and gathering personal items to bring back with us. We did very little hiking due to the fires but still enjoyed the week!
It got fairly cold at night, so we spent a lot of time inside the camper. No campfires were allowed because of the forest fires. We discovered the NBC show, "This Is Us" while on this trip (and became new fans)!
The nicest surprise of all that trip was the color! For some reason the leaves turned later and we had a nice week of color in the leaves.
We left on Saturday and drove to a Camping World campground in South Georgia near the Florida state line. We wanted to stop over where we could get the Gators/Seminole football game (thus no Walmart stay). It was $22 to have cable, wifi, and full hookups. This will definitely be a continued stop over if they keep it open! Not a camping destination but a great overnight stop.
Our F350 got its first try towing the fifth wheel in the mountains. It did OK, not perfect, but we made it! We know some things we need to do to it now to get it ready for trips west!
Here are some pictures of our 6 nights at Tallulah Gorge on our 5th stay.
