Campground Reviews

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park - Santa Rosa Beach, FL

This is a really nice campground, especially the newer area.  It has the feel and look of Disney's Ft. Wilderness.  They offer full hook ups, cable tv, kayak rentals, lake fishing, bike/hiking trails, laudry, pool and beach access.  The beach access is only by bike, walking or using the tram operated by the park.  Apparently the campground was willed to the state of Florida once the owners died.  It has a private RV Resort feel.  There are also cabins at the park for those who do not own or want to tow an RV.

PROS:  Nice, paved sites.  Big rig friendly.  Plenty of resort amenities. Access to a beautiful, natural and uncrowded beach.  Great location to Destin, Seaside and other resort areas.

CONS:  Showing some signs of age (busted concrete sites).  Not upkeeping the wifi in locations around the campground.  Beach access only via bike, walk or tram.  Must have digital TV to received cable signal (this is new).  For us, location, 8.5 hours away which means we can only get there yearly at best.

Kissimmee KOA

Nice smaller campground located in the heart of Kissimmee.  Easy access to all the theme parks.  Offers a pool, spa, laundry, full hook ups, cable, jumping pillow, dog walk, small playground and bike rentals.  This small KOA even offers wine tasting and pancake breakfasts at select times.  We enjoy spending a weekend here when Ft. Wilderness is too expensive or not available.  Some sites offer deluxe patio furniture with nice grills, fire pit and a wooden swing.

PROS:  Big rig friendly.  Plenty of RV Resort Amenities.  Close to the theme parks, particularly easy to get to SeaWorld/Aquatica/Discovery Cove.

CONS:  Small. Not many activities.  Camp office is only opened until 5pm but they do try to work well with late check ins.

Ft. Desoto Campground - Tierra Verde, FL

Ft. Desoto is a Pinellas County Campground.  It is quite rustic and each site is unique, thus might take some research for bigger rigs.  The campground offers several waterfront sites where you can kayak directly off your campsite.  Also, sites on the seawall which are located directly on the canal can have power boats docked.  Pets are only allowed on the pet loop.  Site 153 is by far the BEST site in the entire park.

PROS:  Location!  Water front sites allow for easy water access on kayaks, canoes or SUPs.  Some sites can dock boats/jet skis.  Playground at each loop.  Easy and free access to the beach and old fort.  Plenty of walking/running/biking paved trails that run along the beach area.  South beach is a popular place to wind surf.  Dog park and dog beach.  Offers tours by boat daily to Egmont Key.

CONS:  No sewer hook up.  Roads and campsites are not paved and things get very dusty and dirty.  Bathrooms are just soso.  Only 6 people are allowed to stay at the site.  Only 2 dogs allowed.  Only one loop for dogs.  Not all sites are waterfront.  Sites are very hard to get, especially waterfront.  Non-Pinellas residents can book 6 months in advanced.  Pinellas County residents can book 7 months, so popular times of the year are mostly taken by county residents.

Cherry Hill RV Resort, College Park, Maryland

Cherry Hill is located on the beltway surrounding the Washington DC area.  Cherry Hill is the closest RV Resort to downtown DC.  It is a super nice campground offering activities, pool, jacuzzi, restaurants, evening movies and more.  The sites are full hook up and also has cabins for those without an RV.  A metro bus makes regular stops at the campground and transports guests to the metro station about 5 miles away.  The metro ride into DC is about 30 minutes, if you exit at the Archives.

PROS:  Plenty of amenities including pool, jacuzzi, laundry, full hook ups, cable, restaurants, camp store, mini golf, club house and more.  Location to DC area. Big rig friendly.

CONS:  Expensive and they charge extra for more than 2 people.  It is close to DC, but Metro ride is long and expensive.  It cost our family $50 each time we went into and out of DC.  The traffic around the campground is crazy (not their fault) but does make commuting difficult.  We used the Metro to reach DC, but drove to Arlington, Mt. Vernon and Dulles Airport for the National Air Museum's hanger.  Gun owners beware...you are NOT allowed to have a CCW with you if camping in Maryland.
